Socially significant diseases

Socially significant diseases can be defined as diseases of contemporary lifestyle. These diseases are among the main reasons for morbidity and mortality among population of countries around the globe. Large and abrupt changes in lifestyle, as well as diverse risk factors (smoking, sedentary way of life, stress, intake of unhealthy food) sharply change the rate of socially significant diseases and in quite a few cases increase martality among large groups of people.

Socially significant diseases economically and psychologically burden people and their families. These diseases often lead to disability, deteriorating optimal functioning in performance of daily activities. Socially significant diseases define the profile and structure of morbidity and mortality in a specific region in the world.

Main socially significant diseases of the cardiovascular system

Some of the main socially significant diseases are the diseases of the cardiovascular system: ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension and cerebrovascular disease.

Main risk factors for development of cardiovascular diseases

Hypertension is unlocking factor for cardiovascular diseases for all ages and genders. Affected glucose tolerance or diabetes are classified as additional atherogenic factors. Family predisposition also, intake of nicotine (smoking), sedentary lifestyle, as well as food rich in lipids are considered additional risk factors.

Prevention of cardiovascular diseases

Primary and secondary prevention includes groups of strategies for health promotion, related to reduction of specific risk factors - reduction of nicotine intake (smoking), obesity control, more adequate healthy eating habits, increase of physical activity.

These strategies require institutional cooperation, education of the population, adequate information system for monitoring morbidity and prevalence of risk factors, as well as competent medical society.

These activities should be population-based and they should be oriented to the individual. Population-based programmes that function with the aim to change lifestyle and habits become common way in help of public health. Some of the programmes for prevention of cardiovascular diaseses are:

* CINDI (Countrywide Integrated Noncommunicable Disease Intervention) programme for prevention.
This is programme is developed by the WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) for prevention of chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCDs). The programme was started in 1982. It is targeted towards society as a whole - children and adolescents, elderly people, as well as population in disadvantaged socioeconomic position. Bulgaria participates in the programme with several regions (Dobrich, Yambol, Vidin, Stara Zagora, Ruse, Gabrovo, Lovech and Veliko Tarnovo).

* MONICA (monitoring trends and determinants in cardiovascular disease) programme. This is epidemic prospective cohort study, which aims to clarify the reasons for differences in mortality due to ischemic heart disease (IHD) and serebrovascular disease (insult) in different countries and regions.
