Diseases of the immune system

Immunology is medical specialty, which studies various aspects of the human immune system. Some of these aspects are physiologic functioning of the immune system in conditions of good health or disease, problems in its functioning with different immune diseases (autoimmune diseases, oversensitivity, immune failure, transplant rejection) and physical, chemical and physiologic characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ and in vivo. Many of these components in humans are actually at the cellular level and are not related with concrete organ. They circulate or are found in different tissues throughout the whole organism. Lymphoid organs of key significance for the immune system are the thymus and the bone marrow. Of secondary importance for functions of the immune system are lymphatic tissues in tonsils, spleen, lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes, the skin and adenoids.  

Diseases of the immune system are allocated in two large categories:

* Immunodeficiency dieases: In these diseases parts of the immune system cannot succeed in producing adequate response;

* Autoimmune diseases: In these diseases the immune system attacks its own organism of the individual (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, myasthenia gravis, etc.).  

Some other immune disorders include various stages of oversensitivity, in which the immune system responds incorrectly or too violently to otherwise harmless substances (e.g. asthma or allergies).
